Empowering Rural Voices: West Central Initiative Announces Democracy Summit
West Central Initiative will host community members, leaders, and changemakers from west central Minnesota and beyond at its Rural Democracy Summit 2025: Toward a Positive Rural Vision, which will be held Friday, October 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Morris.
"This gathering is a space to exchange ideas, build new connections, and spark collective action aimed at strengthening democracy and growing vibrant rural communities," said Ben Schierer, West Central Initiative Director of Civic Partnerships.
The summit will feature a distinguished panel discussion featuring Heidi Heitkamp, former United States Senator; Tom Horner, former candidate for governor and former chief of staff for United States Senator David Durenberger; Mark Ritchie, former Minnesota Secretary of State; and Kathy Cramer, author and professor. The discussion will be moderated by Lori Sturdevant, retired Minnesota Star Tribune political columnist.
Following the panel, participants will take part in interactive breakout sessions led by sector leaders, where they can share their perspectives, ask questions, and contribute to shaping a positive vision for the region’s future.
West Central Initiative encourages anyone who leads, organizes, or simply cares deeply about rural Minnesota's future to attend. The summit is designed to spark connections, tackle pressing challenges, and inspire cooperation rooted in hope.
Lunch will be provided. This free event is open to all, but space is limited. Please register as soon as possible to reserve your spot. The registration deadline is Monday, October 27.
