Fergus Falls Salvation Army Announces Closure of Thrift Store

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. The Fergus Falls Salvation Army regrettably announces the closure of its longstanding Family Store, marking the end of more than 60 years of service to the community. Despite exhaustive efforts by dedicated staff to increase profitability, the thrift store has faced financial challenges exacerbated by a challenging economy and increased competition.

"Our team has worked tirelessly to explore various avenues to sustain the store's operations," said Lieutenant Joshua Bowyer, who leads the Fergus Falls Salvation Army. "However, the economic impact of greater thrift shop competition has made it difficult to maintain viability."

The decision to close the store was not made lightly, but rather as a responsible step forward to better allocate available resources and further enhance services for Otter Tail County. Operating the store at a financial loss meant that money that could be used for other critical programs at the Fergus Falls service center was being redirected to keep the store open.

"We are immensely grateful for the ongoing support from the community over the decades," Bowyer said. "The thrift store has been one of the cornerstones of our outreach efforts, providing affordable goods and a sense of community for generations. However, after careful consideration, we believe this closure is necessary to better utilize our entrusted resources for the greater good of Otter Tail County."

The Fergus Falls Salvation Army commends its thrift store team for their unwavering dedication and hard work in serving the community. Their commitment has been integral in providing essential services and fostering a sense of belonging for countless individuals and families.

The store closure allows the service center to not only maintain core offerings such as its food pantry, community meals, and outreach ministries, but creates opportunities to address the evolving needs of the community with enhanced services. In addition, a study is underway to determine the best use of the thrift store property in the future.

The community is encouraged to continue their support during this transitional period. The last day for accepting community donations will be Saturday, March 29 and the thrift store's doors will remain open until its final day of operation on Thursday, May 1.

As The Salvation Army in Fergus Falls embarks on this new chapter, it remains steadfast in its mission to serve those in need and looks forward to continuing to make a positive impact in Otter Tail County.
